Hi All,
I am a tenured qual sociologist and teacher in a VLRM--think 4/4 regional public, rural and low pay. I just earned tenure, but because of my low pay, I would be willing to walk without tenure to make more money as an assistant elsewhere. I am also not wedded to the academy. The only academic job I would be willing to move into would be one in a good location, or with good teaching load and salary. Otherwise, I would want to change careers, still using my doc in Sociology. Does anyone have any advice about ethnography jobs (and the related skills therein) that people in my boat could pursue?

Policy evaluation firms, including mathematica, ICF international and AIR will sometimes hire qualitative methodologists, though a lot less frequently than quant folks. Start looking through the American Evaluation Association and APPAM job listings and see if anything draws your eye.

Think about jobs in user experience research or design research. These are obviously limited to large cities, but there are jobs available. Both are qualitative.
