The Research Participation Program for the U.S. Army Public Health Command (USAPHC) provides opportunities to participate in USAPHC on-going applied research projects in the areas of environmental health engineering, entomological sciences, ionizing and nonionizing radiation, occupational and environmental health, industrial hygiene and worksite hazards, environmental sanitation and hygiene, and laboratory services worldwide.
PROJECT DETAILS
An appointment is available at the Behavioral and Social Health Outcomes Program with the US Army Public Health Command
This appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
• Provide qualitative expertise and support to the US Army through the utilization of a variety of qualitative traditions (i.e. grounded theory, phenomenology, case studies) and principles (design, sampling, interviewing and focus group facilitation, rigor).
• Assist in the design, coordination and execution of qualitative and mixed-methods behavioral health investigations, field studies and program evaluations.
• Analyze and interpret large amounts of qualitative data using NVivo software to determine themes and trends in the behavioral and social health of the U.S. Army (i.e. suicide, mental health conditions, substance abuse, violence).
• Must have experience coding qualitative interview and/or focus group transcripts using qualitative data analysis software.
• Must have advanced qualitative data analysis experience and the ability to manage qualitative projects in a fast paced work environment.
• Disseminate findings through the development and execution of technical reports, scholarly manuscripts and professional presentations.
• Travel within the U.S. and possibly outside the U.S. if required.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have completed or be pursuing a doctoral degree in Behavioral Health, to include: Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or similar degree within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.
The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at Aberdeen Proving Ground and/or the host Installation.
The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years based upon recommendation of USAPHC and subject to availability of funds. The appointment is full time at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host installation.
The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for Postgraduate Internship participants. The appointment is full time at the host installation.
