Assistant Professor of Sociology
About the Position: The Department of Sociology at Western Washington University invites applications to fill a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Latina and Latino Sociology to begin September 2017. We seek candidates who can also contribute to teaching one or more of our core courses in sociological theory, research methods, or statistics.
About the College/Department: The Sociology Department is comprised of thirteen full-time faculty engaged in a wide range of research activities who often involve undergraduate students in their research. The Center for Social Science Instruction is housed within the Department and provides assistance to faculty and students with computing and statistical analysis. The Department also maintains a significant international focus, and enthusiastically supports faculty-led study abroad programs. The Sociology Department supports Western's mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities, and encourages applications from diverse candidates. Western Washington University is located in Bellingham, Washington (approximate population of 80,000) located 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia, and 90 miles north of Seattle. The area is rich with natural beauty and cultural activities. Latino/as are one of the fastest growing populations in Washington State. Approximately 15,000 students attend the University; about 94% of these students are undergraduates; students of color represent 25% of the campus population. Position Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate courses within the department's existing curriculum
Develop new courses in the area of Latina and Latino Sociology (for example, in border issues, transnational families, intergroup relations, identity, public health, labor markets, law, or politics)
Ability and willingness to teach one of the department's three core courses in theory, statistics, or methods
Active engagement in scholarship, including scholarly publications
Active participation in service activities within the Department, University, and discipline
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related social science area with specialization in Latina and Latino Sociology/Studies by September 16, 2017
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with underrepresented student populations in the department and on campus
Demonstrated potential for excellent teaching in Latina and Latino Sociology/Studies and ability to teach one of the department's core courses (theory, statistics, and methods)
Demonstrated potential to maintain an active program of research/scholarship and publication
Preferred Qualifications:
Successful prior teaching experience
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Interest in collaborative research with undergraduates
