Position Summary:
The Africana Studies Program and the Department of Criminology in the College of Social Sciences at California State University, Fresno are accepting applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank with a Fall 2017 start date. We seek the joint appointment of a general specialist in Sociology/Criminology with a research emphasis in race/class analysis who could teach courses in both curricula, including General Education. Specific courses that the successful candidate should be ready to teach include the following options for Africana Studies: Critical Thinking About Race, Sociology of the Black Experience, Race Relations, African American Community, American Inequality, Law and the Minority Community; and the following options for Criminology: Ethnic & Gender Issues in Criminal Justice, Institutional Corrections, Juvenile Delinquency, Community-Based Corrections, Trauma & Crisis Intervention.
Required Education:
An earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in Africana Studies, Criminology or closely related field such as Sociology from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For continued employment in a tenure track position the doctorate must be completed by 8/11/2018.
Required Experience:
1) Primary research interests that emphasize race and class analysis such as social movements, community corrections, mass incarceration, victim services, minority relations and policing, social justice and activism, juvenile delinquency, ethics, methods and theory; judicial process and the courts;
2) Ability to make new contributions in teaching and research for increased collaboration between the Africana Studies Program and Criminology Department;
3) Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
1) Evidence of publications in scholarly journals;
2) Expertise in U.S. race relations and the criminal justice system (including one or more of the Criminology Department’s four options of: law enforcement, corrections, victimology, and forensic behavioral sciences).
