Interested in what you all think of publishing in the same journal for a second time. Should you first aim to publish in different venues? Under what circumstances is it desirable to publish in the same venue?
Thanks

Obviously publishing in ASR or AJS twice is good, so I assume that's not the case you have in mind. From what I've seen professors at high prestige departments, some publish in the same venue the next year or so if it is the top journal in the specialty, or maybe the second one, as long as you also have publications elsewhere. The most extreme example of this I've seen is Iddo Tavory, who had 3 of his first 6 articles in Theory and Society, but he also had a co-authored ASR (first author as a student but with a professor) and other two in Sociological Theory. This is not common, but it may give you an idea. So I'd guess publish in at least 3 good journals before you start repeating yourself. Maybe I'd publish in 4 or 5 less prestigious journals before repeating yourself. The point is that it doesn't look like you can only publish there (or there and in low-ranked journals) because you have an "in" with the editor. Just my two cents as a young AP, so maybe someone more senior can tell you more.

Thanks for the response.
No, it's not an AJS paper - it is based on area studies work so hard to get in the top us generalist journals.
To be honest, though, with the amount of time it takes to get a paper evaluated and published, my first inclination is to publish where it's a good fit, as it could very possibly come out like a couple of years after other things I get published... But I'll try to publish more widely, and will try another venue first...
