Wow, they fire one or two tenured professors for voicing an opinion, so now they are hiring. LOL

This is a replacement hire for a member of the department who is retiring. It is not related to the current controversy.

Well, yes it is related, same institution. This current controversy should be of interest to anyone considering such a place.
Holy cow, the gatekeeping captions are slow and tedious for this site. No wonder posts are limited and it is dying.

Folks want to know if a position is tenure track, and if so, if tenure has any meaning at the institution. Clearly at MSMU, it doesn't, at least not with the current prez and BoT. It would be a perfect job for me, location-wise at least, but I'm not going near there with a ten-foot pole. I like things like academic freedom and due process, things Newman clearly doesn't. Perhaps if the BoT understands that this is driving away talented potential faculty, they might actually fire Newman and force his buddy boy Coyne to resign. They apparently had some sort of business deal that was "coincidental" according to inside sources shortly before Newman was appointed. Yeah, sure, coincidence.

It is a tenure track position. Those interested should apply.
There should be a more complete picture of what has happened by the time we get to the interview stage.

after reading some of the criticisms it looks like the president has alienated cultural conservatives and gained student support by modernising the curriculum.

The two faculty members that were fired Monday were both reinstated on Friday.
There's still anger and hurt on campus, but calls from many directions to calm down, listen to each other, and work things out. We'll get over this. Certainly by the time the position advertised begins in August.
I've been at the Mount for almost 8 years. It's a good place to work. If you want to join a tight, collegial department and have real mentoring relationships with students on a gorgeous campus, don't let the bad publicity we inflicted on ourselves these past few weeks dissuade you from applying.

Re: Hansen -- To be honest, the concerns that seemed to have motivated the "bunnies" remark were enrollment/graduation rate driven -- and this controversy will likely have a negative impact on enrollment & retention. I am concerned abut the long term survival of your program enough that I am reluctant to apply. Sweet Briar (and other struggling small private collages) didn't have to shrug off a storm of bad press that you are experiencing. This is what has me most concerned.

When Sweet Briar initially tried to close, it had an endowment of $90 million. Mount St. Mary's has less than $50m. For schools whose budgets are almost entirely tuition dependent, it only takes a short dry spell to put the whole house in disorder. I still would encourage people to apply (a TT job is a TT job). But if you get this one, I'd have a plan B upon arrival.

Valid concerns for any job. We're getting applications from folks who had their programs eliminated from under them.
Here, however: - Faculty had raises effective January, and our funds for conference travel etc. have been increased. - Campus technology is being upgraded. - Our president has had some bad publicity, but none of it says he's bad at managing money. - Oh, and we're also hiring. Did I mention that?
These are all signs that the end is not, in fact, near.
