The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin in August 2016.
The position will be based in one or more of the schools, departments and centers of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (see sbs.arizona.edu for list of possible units).
We seek candidates who specialize in the critical examination of food and society in cultural, historical, geographic, political, social and/or environmental context. Research dimensions of interest might include food justice, globalization of food systems and food commodities, food security and consumption, indigenous, ethnic and traditional foods studies, sustainable food systems, ethnobotany and society, food ethics, values, or rights, and/or community/urban/trans-border food and agricultural connections. Candidates should be enthusiastic about interdisciplinary research and collaborations across the college and with other colleges of the university (such as the colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Public Health) and about the potential for connecting to the local and regional community.
The successful applicant will join a vibrant and exciting group of scholars, students and community members who are interested in food studies. Clusters and initiatives include collaborations on foodways of the Southwestern US and border region, global climate change, water policy, and food systems, food studies as part of area, ethnic and gender studies, and food studies, agricultural extension and education, health and human development. Plans are underway for a food studies network/center/certificate program and to promote Tucson as a city known for its food cultures. University of Arizona students work across the campus and the community in projects that promote composting, support community and school gardens, and advocate for food justice. The Tucson region hosts numerous food organizations and events such as an innovative Community Food Bank, Native Seed/Search, the Southwest Folk Alliance, and groups working on food issues with refugees and migrants, the city, tribes, schools, farm groups, and restaurants.
The faculty member will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. The faculty member will also participate in outreach and contribute to departmental, college, and university service. In these and other ways, the faculty member will help to develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.
As an assistant professor at the University of Arizona, the successful candidate will be expected to produce a record of excellence in published research, teaching and service. The College is seeking an individual who is able to work with diverse students and colleagues, and who has experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.
