Other board says campus invites were sent. Anyone confirm? They skip the telephone/Skype?

Yes, they skipped phone/skype interviews. Campus invites were sent.

So the same day additional materials were due - without even taking a few days to give the illusion those materials were actually reviewed - they went ahead and skipped the phone interview stage and directly issued campus invites. It seems reasonable to conclude they have a specific preferred/insider candidate. Good for that person, but really rotten for everyone who had references take the time to write them letters when they likely were already out of the running.

Most departments have someone specific or an insider candidate in mind...so tell us something we don't know!

I don't see how that means they have a preferred or inside candidate... they may have asked for additional materials, only to have a few folks tell them they already accepted offers elsewhere, so they went ahead and issues campus invites to the remaining few. Point being, 1) you don't know they have a candidate in mind already, and 2) even if they do, plenty of candidates turn off the SC when it comes time to interview. I've seen "favorites" put themselves out of the running by being too self-promoting and gossipy - not traits one wants to have in a future colleague!

Their hire needs to fill the shoes of A. Kathryn Stout. They better have a preferred candidate! I'm disappointed I didn't get the invitation for the campus visit (I felt confident I would), but if you didn't know folks there (or, more appropriately, if they don't know you), you probably shouldn't have been a contender.

Congratulations on the strong hire! I see MC is trying to rebuild their department, since a few years ago it was in shambles due to a parochial (and very sexist) faculty, who barely has one publication, attempted to, more ore less, govern the department to protect his own illusions. Yeah, he wasn't even a sociologist.
