I thought their deadline was Oct. 31.

there was an interview time already slotted for the week immediately after the 31st, so they've scheduled that interview already. That's the only one they've scheduled.

I didn't see any VAPs on their faculty page, but this interview may be with someone who already has a foot in the door.

This may be suspect information. Penn's chair chimed in on an online forum and mentioned the job search and that people in the group should consider applying, which is unlikely if they weren't going to actually conduct a search. Plenty of places have speakers who aren't job candidates scheduled to visit; it is the normal way of things, after all.

what information is suspect? The information I'm providing is: an interview with a candidate (not currently at Penn) for the race position has been scheduled. I have direct knowledge that this is the case. Whether the search committee has contacted other candidates, has a short-list, etc., I do not know.

Maybe you are right, and maybe you aren't, but the deadline is October 31st and the department chair (with whom I am fairly familiar) encouraged people in a different forum to apply. In light of this, please forgive me for being skeptical about the idea that they already have interviews scheduled before the deadline has expired. If you are accurate, then I stand corrected.

There may be a very hot minority candidate they don't want to risk losing.

There may be a very hot minority candidate they don't want to risk losing. Being an accomplished minority candidate isn't the huge advantage that some assume it to be.

they scheduled ONE interview early because the interviews are traditionally held during a pre-scheduled colloquium series to ensure as many faculty as possible can go to the job talk.
there's an advantage to applying early, I guess. Applications are still coming in and are still encouraged. Those two facts aren't mutually exclusive.

It is VERY common for schools to call interviewees before their own deadline. Penn did it before, Wisconsin does it. Indeed, it IS very wise to send in app's as early as possible.
Also, some schools [like it seems Penn in this instance] call interviewees in stages--again, Wisconsin does this too--and the first interviewee may be called before the others have been decided [and before the deadline!]

I know for a fact that the position is still very much open and all interested parties are strongly encouraged to apply. Period.
