I was wondering what people do when the posted advertisement for a job and its online application don't fully correspond. For example, a job I just applied to had an ad that asked for a teaching portfolio. The online app only asked for a statement of teaching philosophy. I just guessed and attached the portfolio anyway. Any ideas of what to do in these types of situations?

I would have done what you did because I assume that the dept writes the job ad whereas someone in HR sets up the on-line app system.

I assume that your statement of teaching philosophy is included in your teaching portfolio, so err on the side of caution and include the full document. In my case, if said job wasn't interested in anything beyond the teaching statement, the committee could always look at the first few pages and scrap the rest of the document.
In general, I would go with the ad that is published vs. the website, because websites are often adaptations of previously-used templates and someone could easily overlook or neglect a minor alteration like changing a "teaching statement" section to a "teaching portfolio" request.
