The Position: The Department of Sociology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track position beginning August 2016. We are seeking to hire a candidate who can contribute significantly to our clinical/human services track and several newly developed interdisciplinary programs in which the Sociology Department participates.
The University: IUP is a public, doctoral/research university, strongly committed to undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarship, and public service. A member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, IUP is a medium-sized school of over 14,000 graduate and undergraduate students that offers competitive salary and benefits.
The Department: We are a productive department of 14 full-time faculty members. Our programs include a B.A. and an M.A. in Sociology, and a year-round, multidisciplinary Ph.D. in Administration and Leadership Studies in the Nonprofit and Public Sectors. We value civic engagement and maintain an active service-learning program. The Sociology Department and IUP continue to build a community that reflects gender and racial diversity of the society at large; therefore, we invite and encourage applications from underrepresented groups.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach classes in direct/clinical sociological practice, child abuse, and interpersonal violence at the undergraduate level. On occasion, faculty hired for the position may be assigned to teach courses at IUP’s regional campuses, at the Harrisburg campus in our Ph.D. program in Administration and Leadership Studies, and/or provide instruction through distance education.
Position Qualifications: Candidates must have a doctoral degree in sociology, social work, or a related field in hand at the time of appointment (advanced ABDs are invited to apply), and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, scholarly growth, research, publication, and securing external funding. The department is interested in candidates who have a clear commitment to teaching, research, and service that contributes to an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview process, which includes a teaching demonstration and research presentation. All offers of employment are subject to and contingent upon confirmation of work eligibility and satisfactory completion of all pre-employment background checks.
How to Apply: All applications for this position must be submitted via our online application system. Please do not fax, mail, or email any documentation. Only complete applications will be considered and application review will continue until the position is filled. Review of applications will begin immediately and full consideration will be given to applications received by November 2, 2015. A complete application will include: a letter of application; a current curriculum vitae; a writing sample; teaching evaluations and/or other evidence of teaching effectiveness; the names and email addresses for three professional references; and unofficial transcripts. Official transcripts will be required prior to hire.
Three (3) letters of reference must be on file with IUP before consideration is given for an on-campus interview. Automated requests for reference letters will be generated from IUP-HR after an application is submitted.
