Is this to replace Jim Elliott leaving for Rice? Any more info about the AOS or desired sub-fields? What's UO's teaching load?

Is this to replace Jim Elliott leaving for Rice? Any more info about the AOS or desired sub-fields? What's UO's teaching load? 1. Jim Elliott left for Rice. I wouldn't necessarily read too much into the "replacement" idea as A. Jim is an amazing senior scholar and B. the candidates' specialty areas need not align with Jim's. 2. If I had expertise in environmental sociology (broadly defined), I would apply for this job. 3. 2-2 teaching load for APs (Keep in mind that UO is still on the quarter system).

I'm from a low status PhD program. Will you take my application seriously?

What do you expect them to respond? No way, don't apply?

I just want them to be honest. I'm starting to think that pedigree is all that really matters in this field- I feel like they will laugh when they see the name of my uni.

I feel you... despite being the primary discipline that critiques hierarchy and prestige, we sure buy in to it. I was told by my adviser you need to expect to step "down" at first. Can "climb" later. That is, if you want to. Honestly 2-2 research intensive is not for me. I value teaching too much.

Yes, I wish depts. with strong prestige bias would just say so in their job ads- it's not like those of us from low status programs with low status advisers are some type of protected class they are not allowed to discriminate against. Just state "preference given to candidates from elite programs" and I will know to steer clear.

Do you think UO is the type of school to discriminate based on status? Or at least to be very swayed by the glitter of a VHRM applicant?

If you want to discuss the impact of prestige on hiring, please do so in another section of the forum and leave this one to discuss the specific position at oregon.

sorry, I'm not a troll. Just depressed that my efforts for the last several years might be wasted because I am low status. Sorry to derail the thread. If you were in my shoes and the shoes of the other poster you would understand.
