Someone posted a link to the universities to fear wiki on another thread ( academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Universities_to_fear ) and some of the universities I always thought would be nice to work at are there. As probably everybody here knows, information from anonymous sources like that can be highly biased, and one individual can paint a picture that just isn't so. So I thought I'd ask the board about it. No need to cite the specific university or any identifying information. In particular, I am curious about those who are familiar/work at some of the institutions mentioned: - Are there any institutions you are familiar with that are on the universities to fear wiki? - If so, did the entry paint an accurate portrayal of the institution? - If you work at that institution, do you wish you had seen that wiki prior to taking the job?

I don't have any experience with the "universities to fear" listed there, but a lot of the issues listed in them are present in my current university. A lot of the eckerd's "problems" (since I believe that is what got the wiki originally linked here) read more like they come from people unprepared/unhappy that they are at a teaching place (e.g., "too many office hours," "too much service," etc).

In this current climate, people really can't be picky. Yes, it can suck to get a job at a terrible university. But you know what is worse? Being unemployed. And it is certainly easier to move from an assistant professor position than from unemployment.

I interviewed at one of the schools on this list and the comments about the ways in which it is a hostile environment for non-whites are spot on. i knew that though when i applied because Im originally from the area (i actually used to go to events at the school as a high schooler) and my family still live there. As im presently a VAP on the other side of the country, though, racist or not home is home. I didnt get the job though, and given that the SC asked two separete questions about how "comfortable" I would be "in a place like this", I got the feeling they liked me but were nervous about how a non-white person would manage.
