Some additional information:
These two positions are in the Department of Sociology. There are other units at Cornell that hire sociologists (e.g., Development Sociology, Organizational Behavior, Policy Analysis and Management), and at least two of these have advertised searches already this year (Dev Soc in food systems and PAM open-rank in demography). Candidates need to apply separately for these positions in different units and are encouraged to do so.
For the Department of Sociology, the search committee anticipates having a list of its favorite 30 candidates by the end of September, and the top dozen will then be forwarded on for full department review in early- or mid-October. Invitations for on-campus visits (between 3 and 6 of them) will go out before the end of October.
Cornell encourages all students to apply, even if they do not have any solo-authored publications. We read the work of our candidates very closely, and we judge the quality of in-progress manuscripts carefully, making our own forecasts of whether a candidate's manuscripts will a launch successful research career. In other words, we don't rely on reviewers of sociology journals to sort our applicants for us.

The PAM search is a continuation of a search from last year that did not land its candidate. It is continuing this year, is open-rank, but is in the area of demography (possibly broadly defined to include policy with a demographic flavor). I do not know if they plan to release another ad this year, or work from the list that they had last year of senior candidates. If you are a demographer looking for a job (new PhD, junior, or senior), I recommend that you contact the department directly to inquire about whether they are welcoming new candidates into their search.
