what's up with this Princeton post? It just showed up on inside higher ed but its kinda late for an R1 to be just starting a search right? or do they mean for fall 2016? --- The Department of Sociology is searching for a senior sociologist interested in inequality in the US and especially in new methods of exploring this phenomenon. Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until a final decision is made. Please submit cover letter, Curriculum Vitae, and one or more samples of written work at jobs.princeton.edu. Names and contact information for three references also required. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. Princeton University is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

1. Proposed Start Date: 09-01-2016
2. I will take any wager that the senior sociologist who gets this job will have never visited this website.
(In other words, if you are reading this now, don't even bother applying.)

So does "Senior scholar" mean full profs only? What if you are a newish Assoc prof who recently hit it big/got a huge grant that perfectly fits the description? Or is this just a post for a job they already have someone in mind for?

Always apply if you feel you have a shot. However, my guess is that they have someone in mind, but these things don't always workout the way they are expected to. Princeton doesn't need to formally advertise positions when it is trying to lure a specific person. The fact that this listing is public suggests that they really are casting a wider net, looking for a senior hire to replace some of their recent high-profile departures.
