It seems platitudinous to say that the job market can get one down. But I've found that whenever I see that someone from a city that I have applied for a job in pulled up my work on academia.edu its like a tiny (albeit admittedly circumstantial) ray of sunshine creating a rainbow in the middle of a storm; and I can continue to hope another day.

Not to discourage you, but as someone who struck out on the market, I wish I had really had no bites or indications of interest. That way it would be much easier to move on. It's phone interviews, hits on my website, and all these other little rainbows that keep me coming back to the market, and perhaps I shouldn't.

i hear you Debbie. this is my second year on the market and unless one of these last applications pans out it will be my second year striking out. its obviously different for each person so i dont want to diminish your feelings, but for me no bites is harder than interviews/signs of interest. my first year i got nada, not even web hits, and it was brutal on my self-esteem/image/worth whatever you want to call it. this year ive had half a dozen interviews and weekly web hits. and though ive yet to be the finalist who gets the offer, at least being in contention feels better to me than not being considered at all.

Well, the issue may be that I am beyond my second year on the market. And the reason I've been going on the market more than I should is that I never fully strike out. One year I was a runner up and the SC chair told me they really tried hard to get the dean to offer an additional position. Another the SC actually recommended me, but the dean decided to go in another direction. And you know what you call the person who was a runner up to their dream job? Still unemployed.
