UC Merced Sociology is hiring up to two full-time lecturers (teaching load is 3 courses per semester), with an annual salary of $49,012. Opportunities for summer teaching (and additional salary) are available. We involve our lecturers in the intellectual life of the department, and have a strong track record of our lecturers moving on to tenure track positions.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The University of California is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced provides new educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.
The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts seeks a lecturer(s) to teach courses in Sociology for Fall 2015 and Spring 2016. Courses being offered may include: Introduction to Sociology; Research Methods; Social Problems; Crime and Deviance; Sociological Theory; Statistics for Sociology; Political Sociology; Social Stratification; Gender and Society; Social Inequality; Law and Society; Crime in International Perspective; Urban Inequality; Chicanos in the US; and Immigration.
This is a limited-term appointment which falls under the purview of the agreement for the Lecturers Unit between University of California and the American Federation of Teachers.
In addition to teaching the course, the instructor is responsible for creating a syllabus, holding weekly office hours grading examinations and/or papers. The instructor may also be required to hold discussion sections or supervise a graduate student teaching assistant, if available, and is expected to be able to meet with students outside the classroom for at least two hours per week.
