I swear there was a thread on things you "wish you knew" before an interview, but since I couldn't find it, I thought I'd start one:
Here's a mistake I made that I will learn from, but I wish I knew:
- There is no such thing as off-the-record on interviews. Ever. I went on an interview where they intentionally had me meet with someone outside the search committee, so that I could ask things more candidly. Turns out that a lot of what we talked about made its way to the ears of the search committee. I don't think it was malicious, but it bears repeating: during an interview, you have to be "on" all the time. Nothing is "off record."
