Earlham has a $405 million endowment so they should be able to handle enrollment crises better than tuition-driven colleges. They are still very much tuition-driven, that's the problem. They are in crisis mode now. I have a friend from undergrad that works in admin. at Earlham. They shared that the college is running substantial annual budget deficits in the millions and that they only have like 900-ish students. They said they are dealing with declining enrollments and are also have major retention issues. The endowment is the only thing keeping them afloat. But how long can that last for?

UC Santa Barbara will stand up another search for a junior faculty immigration scholar - assuming it will kick off next year, but I think they're still piecing it together.

Development Sociology at Cornell University will very likely try again to hire for a tenure track position. They haven't had any luck with searches due to what seems like a serious mismatch between their extremely high standards for candidate selection and what they actually offer these candidates. Buyer beware. Be sure to look into success rates for tenure as well.

Regarding tenure success: look at the CVs of those denied tenure and judge whether or not the standards were too high. I personally don't think so.
The failed searches have been population/environment/quant/spatial-ish.

But there's no list of people denied tenure, so people not in the now, don't know which CVs at which to look

Seriously? Sociology that deals with issues related to development? There is even a section for it on the ASA. sociologyofdevelopment.com/

Yeah, and that department places more of its phds into TT jobs than the "other" sociology dept at Cornell.

This is probably neither here not there at this point, but wondering if the UC Santa Barbara position will be further restricted in some way (such as, as has been case with a few ads this past hiring cycle, to scholars studying specifically Hispanic migration to the US or similar).

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will be hiring a sociologist with a crim specialty this year. They like to remind potential candidates that Whitewater, though a small country town, is actually a good location -- an hour from Milwaukee, a little under an hour from Madison (many faculty live in either place), and a couple hours from Chicago. A 4/4 load, but the department tries to protect pre-tenure folks by assigning only 2 preps per semester.

With Reinerman retiring is UC Santa Cruz going to be hiring this year? Anyone know?

Portland State University will be hiring for two positions: one with a specialization in urban sociology, the other with a specialization in criminology. Methodological specializations are open on both. Job ads coming soon.
