CIFAR Junior Fellowship Social Interactions, Identity and Well-Being Program
The Junior Fellow Academy of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research is an elite fellowship program designed to build research and leadership capacity in gifted scholars at a critical early stage of career development. The Academy offers unique opportunities for growth through close collaboration with and mentorship from some of the best researchers in Canada and around the world.
Junior Fellows become members of one of CIFAR’s innovative research programs and of the leadership-building Junior Fellow Academy. In these settings, Junior Fellows are encouraged to think broadly and imaginatively across disciplines and to collaborate on a deep level with colleagues. These valuable experiences can profoundly impact a Junior Fellow’s future career path.
CIFAR’s Social Interactions, Identity and Well-Being (SIIWB) Program is seeking exceptional early career researchers to fill two Junior Fellowship positions beginning in the winter and summer of 2012, respectively. Most typically, Junior Fellows work as postdoctoral fellows under the direct supervision of one or more CIFAR program members. In this case, positions are tenable at any of the institutions where Fellows or Scholars of the program are based. Applicants in the social sciences and humanities alternatively may hold a junior faculty position at any university. Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify and contact the program member(s) they wish to work with before submitting an application.
The SIIWB Program is engaged in interdisciplinary research embracing and spanning our three core concepts. Our members include economists, psychologists, sociologists and political scientists, and our research methods include theory, experiments, field trials, and the analysis of survey data. Visit www.cifar.ca/social-interactions-identity-and-well-being for further information about the program and its members.
Eligibility:
Individuals who have completed or will complete their PhD no more than three years prior to the anticipated Fellowship starting dates are eligible to apply. The successful candidates will have an outstanding record of accomplishment in an area of interest to the program, excellent communication skills, strong potential to collaborate with program members and ability to contribute to the program’s mission. The candidates will also be interested in exploring the contributions of research to society in collaboration with their peers from other CIFAR programs through the Junior Fellow Academy.
Duration:
Five years. The first two years are funded, as below, with Junior Fellows embedded in a CIFAR program. Thereafter, CIFAR will cover the cost for Junior Fellow Alumni to attend Academy meetings for an additional three years.
Value*:
For postdoctoral fellows (annually for two years):
$70,000 CDN/US for salary and benefits and $5,000 CDN/US for research support
For junior faculty members (annually for two years): $50,000 CDN/US for research support
*US dollar values apply when positions are held outside of Canada.
How to Apply:
Applications should include a full CV, statement of research background and interests, statement of interest in the Junior Fellow Academy, and an imaginative, 3-5 page research proposal related to ongoing projects by members of the program. Applications will be submitted through an online application system. Full application requirements and instructions are posted at www.cifar.ca/JFA. The application deadline is September 1, 2011. Visit the website today for more information about CIFAR and its Junior Fellow Academy.
CIFAR is strongly committed to diversity within its community, and especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups and others who may contribute to further diversification of ideas.
