Job Description Summary:
The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is seeking applicants for Assistant, Associate, or Professor (Full Time, 12 month, Tenure Track) in Medical Humanities and Clinical Bioethics. The School of Medicine recognizes outstanding and innovative teaching and the scholarship of medical education. The successful candidate will be expected to work with an interdisciplinary team of master educators from other basic science disciplines and clinical faculty to implement educational content for medical humanities and clinical bioethics in an innovative and integrated curriculum.
Our curriculum in Medical Humanities and Clinical Bioethics extends throughout the four years of the undergraduate medical school curriculum. There is ongoing collaboration between non-clinical and clinical science faculty and a continual effort to integrate humanities and bioethics with basic and clinical science. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching medical students, a desire to be part of interdisciplinary collaborations, and a desire to do research in medical education for professionalism and promotion of humanism in health care.
General Responsibilities:
1. Provide instruction in the Medical Humanities and Clinical Bioethics (MHCB) courses and in other relevant parts of the overall curriculum.
2. Generate learning materials for instructional activities.
3. Coordinate and integrate curricular content with other MHCB faculty as well as other faculty across the curriculum.
4. Develop and execute clear learning objectives and utilize best instructional practices in medical education.
5. Provide formative and summative assessment of student performance with timely feedback.
6. Participate in scholarly activity including research and publication on topics in bioethics and the medical humanities, including research on medical education in the area of bioethics and the medical humanities.
7. Perform administrative duties such as serving as course director, as negotiated and assigned.
8. Participate in service activities to the University, Medical School, and wider community, including serving on committees and participating in community initiatives.
9. Maintain and improve his/her own competence in subject content and instructional methodology through various professional development activities within and outside of the medical school.
Minimum Qualifications:
A. A doctoral degree (MD, JD, PhD or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (philosophy, anthropology, religious studies, sociology, literary studies, medicine, etc).
B. Evidence of effective teaching to professional students.
Preferred Qualifications:
A. Experience in curricululum development for medical humanities and clinical bioethics for medical students.
B. Experience contributing to an integrated medical school curriculum.
C. Experience with innovative classroom strategies, including the ability to promote active learning among students.
D. Experience in clinical bioethics, and/or bioethics and the law in a hospital setting.
E. Evidence of scholarly and creative activity that would merit appointment in a biomedical department with focus on medical humanities and Clinical bioethics.
