The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) includes the Departments of Art and Culture Studies, Media and Communication, and History at Erasmus University. The ESHCC is home to over 1.000 students and some 120 staff members.

The Department of Arts and Culture Studies is a vibrant, internationally oriented department within the ESHCC. In addition to a Dutch-language bachelor's programme in Culture Studies and a master's programme in Arts and Culture Studies, the Department offers an international master's in Cultural Economics and Cultural Entrepreneurship and a Research master's in the Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. The Department is closely linked to the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC), which serves as the main base for researchers in the sociology of media, culture and the arts at Erasmus.

Associate Professor (UHD) (f/m, 1.0 FTE)in the Sociology of the Arts and Culture
Job description The successful candidate is expected to:
Research
· Carry out internationally oriented, empirical research that is publishable in established international refereed journals;
· Contribute actively to the development of the Department's research in the sociology of the arts and culture;
· Expand the Department's national and international research connections;
· Contribute to the generation of additional research funding from national and international funding agencies and other organizations; · Supervise PhD students, postdocs and other researchers;
· participate actively in the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC), a KNAW recognized Dutch research school, and relevant international scientific associations and networks.
Teaching
· Perform teaching and supervising tasks for the Bachelors and Masters programmes of the Department Arts and Culture Studies. Courses might include: â??Sociologie van Kunst en Cultuur' (Sociology of Art and Culture), â??Kunst en Cultuur in de Media' (Art and Culture in the Media), â??Arts, Culture and Publicity', â??Art and Communication' ;
· Make substantial contributions to the development of the educational programmes of Arts and Culture Studies;
· Teach one or more of the core courses in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods;
· Make substantial contributions to the expansion of international exchange opportunities for students of the bachelors and masters programmes offered by the Faculty.
Service
· Contribute to the management tasks of the Department;
· Take an active part in national and international academic networks and organizations;
· Develop and maintain close contacts with organizations and professionals in the cultural field.
Requirements
The successful candidate has:
- a PhD in one of the social sciences, preferably in the sociology of the arts and culture;
- an excellent academic track record that emerges - among other things - from a large number of international peer-reviewed publications and research projects recruited within the 2nd flow of funds (NWO, ESF, etc.);
- experience in content supervision of junior researchers; - ample teaching experience, also in English, with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers. If possible, the candidate is an assistant professor and has senior qualifications in teaching;
- experience with preparing, developing and maintaining teaching components;
- ample experience with social-scientific research methods;
- expert knowledge in the sociology of the arts and culture, with connections with the field of media and communication;
- the potential to generate research funds from national and international funding agencies and to supervise junior researchers and PhD students;
- the ability and willingness to teach a wide range of topics and to develop new courses;
- strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work closely together with others in a team environment; - proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF). International applicants are expected to acquire the Dutch language within two years.
The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication comprises a large number of disciplines. This means that an associate professor, in addition to having prominent experience in research and teaching, must also show interest in bridging the disciplinary bounds between culture, history, economy, sociology, communication and media studies. The associate professor will be integrated into the Arts and Culture department.
Conditions of employment
Employment starts in November 2011 at the latest.
Contracts will initially be running for a fixed term of 2 years with (a) possible extension(s).
Depending on their track-record and performance, candidates may be invited to enter Erasmus University's Senior's Tenure Track-programme (2 + 2 years), which offers them the possibility to qualify for a tenured position as Full Professor (Hoogleraar).
The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement for Universities in the Netherlands (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 14 CAO NU, with a maximum of â?¬ 5.920,- gross per month on a full-time (38 hour per week) contract. In accordance with the CAO NU a placement in a starting grade (scale 13) is possible for the maximum duration of two years.
