I keep hearing what a great market this was, but there were so few med soc positions and the competition is so crazy. So much for this year.

There are tons of APs on the market. Competition is rough. The first time I was on the market (2008-2009), 20% of the advertised positions were cancelled. Many of us wound up underplaced. We have been on the market since then, and so is every other underplaced AP.
Also, lots of schools don't give raises unless the faculty member has a competing offer... this also clogs up the market.
Sad face indeed.

As a medical sociologist who's in a non-sociology program, I say look around Sad Face. Medical schools, social and behavioral sections of public health, nursing schools, health sciences. They're changing the MCAT to have more sociology and psych questions, so undergraduate programs that attract pre-med people are going to want us. Before coming to my current position, I was in undergraduate "Health Sciences", which is essentially the General Studies degree for people going to health-related careers. They used social scientists all of the time, and their starting salary was higher than Arts & Sciences. If you're willing to go out on a limb, there's other stuff to apply for.

This is a good point - do you have any suggestions re where to find med soc positions outside of sociology departments? What are the best list-serves, sites etc? Thanks for any guidance here.

Hercjobs.org is a very helpful and fairly comprehensive resouce. The trick is to get your search terms right.

Thank you for the links. I have also seen ads for jobs in communication departments with a focus on health communication. Anyone have any experience applying for these positions or know anyone who successfully made the leap? Maybe this is too off topic and should go somewhere else...
