Associate/Full Professor and Chair
Enrollment growth, promotions, and retirements cause the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to seek candidates for a Department Chair for a three-year or more term. Candidates may request consideration for tenure as a contingency of their appointment. The position is a twelve month administrative position with no teaching requirement as part of load, and the Chair is expected to contribute to the University, the College of Liberal Arts and Education (in which the Department is housed), and the Department through research, civic, and university service activities. The Chair’s main role is to lead, guide, and support the Department through collaboration with teaching staff, addressing current needs and developing strategies for future success.
Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered, a candidate must hold the following qualifications upon start of appointment:
The successful candidate must have demonstrated leadership and management competencies and have earned a Ph.D. in criminal justice, forensic investigation, criminology, a criminal justice or public administration area, sociology, penology/corrections, policing/law enforcement, or closely related discipline. The successful candidate will also have an undergraduate or graduate degree in criminal justice, criminology, or closely related field. In addition, candidates are required to have at least five full-time years of teaching at one or more four-year institutions, preferably in programs or departments offering coursework in criminal justice or criminology. Moreover, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated and substantial record of success in, and commitment to, academic excellence, effective written and oral communication, collaboration and teamwork, academic leadership, conflict resolution, and shared governance.
Preferred Qualifications:
To be highly competitive a candidate will exceed the minimum qualifications listed above and demonstrate having some or all of following attributes:
Candidates with extensive experience in organizational management and leadership in higher education are strongly preferred. Specifically, candidates with demonstrated human resources, conflict resolution, and budget competencies will receive strong consideration. The best candidates will have practical and teaching experience in a criminal justice field such as law enforcement, forensic investigation, criminal courts, corrections, or a closely related area. A record of grant awards, applied and published research, a good research record, and/or consultation experience with criminal justice agencies are also highly valued.

The Criminal Justice Department is housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Education, has nine full-time tenure track positions, and regularly employs an additional five academic staff and one administrative assistant. The department offers a B.S. in Forensic Investigation or a B.S. and a B.A. in Criminal Justice, and offers online undergraduate and graduate degrees in Criminal Justice. Class sizes are approximately 30 students.
