Assistant/Associate/Full Professor: Cyberscience/Big Data Initiative
The Department of Sociology and Criminology (http://sociology.la.psu.edu) at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus, invites applications for an open rank tenure line faculty position to begin August, 2015.We seek candidates with substantive research agendas that complement existing areas of specialization within the Department of Sociology and Criminology and who conduct data-intensive research involving large or complex data (including social networks, intensive spatial or longitudinal data, image or video, government or commercial microdata, digital archives, social media, or other web-scale sources) or computationally-intensive techniques (including statistical or machine learning, parallel or distributed computing, Bayesian or other simulation approaches to data analysis, data collection through mobile or distributed devices, crowdsourcing or related human-in-the loop computation, real-time data collection and forecasting, visual analytics, agent-based modeling or related computational approaches to theory development).
This position is part of an interdisciplinary Penn State CyberScience initiative in computation- and data-enabled research (see www.ics.psu.edu/hire.html). Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in collaborating with colleagues across disciplines engaged in Penn State’s CyberScience Initiative and contributing to the training and education missions of the NSF IGERT in Big Data Social Science. Candidates should have a strong publication record and a commitment to securing external funding and teaching and mentoring students. Junior candidates must have completed the Ph.D. by the time of appointment.
