I have worked at Davidson--my first job out and I can tell you they are efficient and professional. I would not expect that this would mean an inside hire necessarily, but folks already there will also be given full consideration. This hire will be about best fit for their students and department. I have zero doubts. I have seen them pass on at least two inside hires before in which cases I know the VAPs were well liked and did good work. The market was just competitive.

Does anyone have any information on the status of this search? Have they scheduled on campus interviews yet?

They are still doing Skype interviews this week. They won't have a flyout list for another week at least, I expect.

Form rejections are out. Whatever.
Since this jobs board allows me to know whether I wasn't invited for phone interviews or flyouts about a month before I get a rejection letter from a dept., this has both positive and negative consequences.
On the positive side, it takes some sting out of getting the formal rejection since I already knew it was coming and had moved on emotionally.
On the negative side, since I've already known about the rejection, the form letter seems more like a painful reminder and insensitive slap in the face now. ("Hey, just to remind you, you suck. Best of luck in your job search, loser.")
This one left a particularly bad taste in my mouth for some reason.

And the "Dear applicant" intro was such a nice touch. Thanks for saying "Dear applicant" rather than just "Applicant." The "Dear" part makes it sound so much more heartfelt and sincere. I feel more cherished because of it.
Thanks, Gerardo Marti.

I think in large part because I know this was a highly sought after position with a large pool. Plus it's Davidson. I wouldn't expect less from a top tier SLAC.

At least they thought and took the time to send a rejection note.

At least they thought and took the time to send a rejection note. Glad you took it better than I did. I just don't accept rejection so well, I guess. Best of luck out there, everyone.

wrong field, then, my friend. Perhaps so, runner. Apparently Davidson agrees with that assessment.

I just got an email from them. Here is what it says.
Dear applicant:
Thank you for your application to our tenure track Assistant Professorship in the Department of Sociology at Davidson College.
We had significant interest in the position, and the search committee carefully evaluated all the applications we received. We have now invited a small group of candidates to campus for interviews and expect to make a final selection from this group. We wanted you to know where we are in the process so you could focus on other opportunities as the year progresses.

But, there was one instance in which I got a rejection email a day after it was posted on here. Maybe there are multiple waves for schools with large applicant pools? For your sake, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it means they are still keeping you in mind!
