Does anyone have information about the status of this search? Their department has two Visiting Assistant Professors. Could this ad be for an inside hire?

Don't think it's an inside hire. The department chair is serious about getting best candidate.

They've reached out to schedule phone interviews.

that's really fast, considering the application deadline was 8 days ago. can someone else confirm requests for interviews?

I agree it's kinda fast, unless they already had favorites they were considering before the deadline. Perhaps there was inside hire stuff going on after all.

As someone who has been in three search committees, it's not so odd to have phone interviews one or two weeks after the deadline. Most search committees start meeting very early, 3 to 4 weeks before the deadline, and by the set date have a fairly good idea of at least half (if not more) of the people who are in the running. In same cases the process of going from one to the other gets delayed by administrational approvals (HR, the dean, etc) but that is usually very swift at liberal art colleges. My advice is for people to apply very early

I can confirm they have invited candidates for fly-outs. I spoke with a friend this week who is one. And NOT a current VAP in their department.

thank you everyone for all of the info. i know committees have different policies they have to follow and some are not supposed to touch applications until the closing deadline has passed while others can view materials as they come in. good luck to those who are invited candidates!

Seems odd that one person is reporting phone interviews and another is saying that fly-outs have been scheduled. Surely these can't both be accurate. Nonetheless, congrats to those who have received interest. It's a great job.
