POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Texas at El Paso is seeking an Assistant Professor of Sociology with research specializations in education, work/occupations, sociology of science, or medicine, with a focus on social inequalities. We seek a scholar with an interest in underrepresented minorities and women in higher education, the training and retention of health scientists and professionals, academic research careers, or professional and workplace diversity issues. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers undergraduate majors and minors in Sociology and Anthropology and a MA degree in Sociology.
The new hire will be expected to synergize with UTEP’s new National Institutes of Health-funded BUILDing SCHOLARS (Building Undergraduate Infrastructure Leading to Diversity: Southwest Consortium of Health-Oriented education Leaders And Research Scholars) Center. The Center will train the next generation of biomedical and socio-behavioral scientists and engineers from underrepresented groups for careers in health research. The Center will address the needs of undergraduate students in the Southwestern US through a multi-institution consortium which includes colleges and universities in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
Responsibilities include teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs, mentoring students in research, and maintaining an active research program, which includes developing research related to NIH’s BUILD initiative (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RM-13-016.html) and UTEP’s BUILDing SCHOLARS Center more specifically.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have an earned doctorate in Sociology by the start date, with demonstrated success in research and an interest in teaching and mentoring students. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
APPOINTMENT DATE AND SALARY: Anticipated appointment date is fall 2015. Salary will be competitive for rank. The position comes with an attractive start-up package, funded through UTEP’s NIH BUILDing SCHOLARS Center.
