POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

The Department of Sociology at The City College of New York, invites applications for an anticipated full-time, tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level available at the beginning of the Fall 2015 semester. The successful candidate, once hired, is expected to fulfill the College’s requirements with regard to teaching, research, record of publications, and service to the institution. Inaugurated in 2013, the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership (formerly the
Division of Social Science) comprises the departments of anthropology, economics, political
Science, psychology, and sociology and interdisciplinary programs in international relations,
international Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, mental health counseling, pre-law,
public service management, and women's studies, and through Skadden, Arps, the Honors
Program for Legal Studies. The school also houses the Ph.D. program in clinical psychology
offered by the CUNY Graduate Center and the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute. The school's

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Substantive areas of research are open, but preference will be given to candidates with expertise in quantitative research.

How strongly should I read 'preference' in these postings, generally. Specifically, Is it even worth applying to this position as an urban ethnographer when 'preference is given to candidates in quant research?'

[my take]

No insider information here, but my take is that preferences generally indicate what they are actually looking for, but they leave it open in case a candidate who does not fit the narrow preference blows them out of the water. So do apply, but don't get your hopes up.

I agree with the previous post: doesn't hurt to apply, because you never know. Also, small depts like this often hire for specific courses or course sequences, so you may increase your chances if your letter/packet can convince them that you are able and willing to teach undergrad stats, even if your primary methods are qualitative.

I know that one of the few quantitative faculty members left the department this year; so, it seems likely they are looking to fill this persons shoes. So, my take is that they really need to fill the quant classes, etc.

I second "some info." They have lots of qual. people but really need a quant. person, especially for their stats classes (undergrad and grad)
