Here's another quick update. Since we had received 329 applicants by Wednesday, September 17, we went ahead and "closed" the search. EOD here recommended that we include a 5-day grace period, after which we would no longer consider applicants. Rather than allowing new applicants to upload materials we would not read, HR went ahead and closed the portal. We apologize to any job seekers who were not able to apply before our timeline, but given the rules we are operating under from EOD and HR, this seemed like the most transparent approach to take.
All our best, Joya Misra

I just wanted to update you all. UMass Sociology has been working through the files, a truly amazing number (329) of excellent candidates. We did close the search, per HR guidelines, so are not taking new applications. We can't move ahead with our longlist until HR/EOD has a chance to make some assessments of our pool. Will hope that we can get through these bureaucratic hurdles sooner rather than later, and be able to communicate with applicants. Thanks for your patience!
All best, Joya

I heard their HR system was cumbersome, which was slowing down their search committee process.

Big props to UMASS for their transparent process.
But yes, I also got the
"we are super impressed with the applicants. it's unbelievable, problematic and fascinating to think that two-thirds of you will be assistant managers at Macys next fall!"

Big props to UMASS for their transparent process. But yes, I also got the "we are super impressed with the applicants. it's unbelievable, problematic and fascinating to think that two-thirds of you will be assistant managers at Macys next fall!" Macy's is hiring? Hook me up! I've got an interview at Olive Garden, but I'd rather do retail than food & bev. But seriously though, this rejection (and a few others) kicked me in the face with the harsh reality that I'm really not as good as I thought I was. Or perhaps I am that good, but I'm clearly not very good at helping hiring committees see that. The latter explanation feels better. Let's go with that.

But seriously though, this rejection (and a few others) kicked me in the face with the harsh reality that I'm really not as good as I thought I was. Or perhaps I am that good, but I'm clearly not very good at helping hiring committees see that. The latter explanation feels better. Let's go with that. Don't internalize that "you aren't good enough"; since you're probably very smart. Instead you can just face the harsh reality that "the competition is super intense" and "the numbers are not on my side". There are just way too many smart, motivated individuals with impressive CVs than there are jobs for them. UMASS got 330 applicants. Probably 80-120 of them are "very good" students and 40-50 of those are "well qualified". If you are top 40 out of 320 ; that means that you are the BEST of every 8 random applicants. Pretty good! But even out of those 40 super-solid "well-qualified" individuals, only 1 (or 2) of those 40 can be hired. (5% or less).
