The Sociology Department of Southern Methodist University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Lecturer position in Sociology beginning August 2011. We seek candidates with excellent teaching skills and prior university experience teaching introduction to sociology or global society. The teaching load of 4 courses per semester will include sections of Introduction to Sociology and/or Global Society and 2 courses in the candidate’s area of special expertise. MA in sociology required but PhD preferred. Send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation that reference teaching, and any evidence of teaching effectiveness to the Lecturer Search Committee at smusociology2011@gmail.com, or Karen Delk, Department of Sociology, Southern Methodist University, P.O. Box 750192, Dallas, TX 75275-0192. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. The committee will notify applicants of its decision after the position is filled. I wish this was a 2012 job. I'd be all over it.
Any chance SMU will be receiving a tenure track line after this 1 year visiting?

I just know a few folks who earned a soci degree there. They said the department is full of great people. Also, I'm partial to Texas as a state of residence. It has a lot of things going for it in terms of recession buffering. Plus, SMU is a private school, so it is insulated somewhat from some of the less than desireable trends I see occurring in the state schools around the country with regard to budgeting. Also, Dallas is a place with which I have some experience.
