The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level to apply for a faculty position related to health equity and/or health disparities. This search will commence a multi-year, interdisciplinary, cluster hire initiative aimed at strengthening existing and creating new interdepartmental/interdisciplinary partnerships across the College. The successful candidate can expect to play an active role in the future recruitment and hiring of two additional junior faculty members in this area.
Candidates should have a doctoral degree or its equivalent in a social or behavioral science with a focus on physical and/or mental health or illness. The search is being conducted with the participation of the Departments of Psychology, Sociology/Anthropology, and Public Policy, and the ideal candidate will have experience working collaboratively across disciplines. The faculty appointment will be determined by the candidate's preferences, disciplinary training, and/or departmental fit.
CAHSS shares UMBC's deep commitment to teaching, research, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will have a research focus in health equity/health disparities related to such factors as: race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and/or other possible barriers to equitable health and health care, with attention to policy implications and applications. Methodological approaches and geographic regions of focus are open. Interdisciplinary, theoretical approaches involving multi-level, cultural, and/or other social and psychological determinants of health and illness are of particular interest. Candidates with a strong track record of research productivity and demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence are also of particular interest. The ideal candidate also will have, and be expected to maintain an active portfolio of externally funded research.
The Department of Psychology has 23 full-time tenure-track faculty members, including a strong core of faculty conducting health-focused research. The department offers BA and BS degrees in Psychology, Master's programs in Applied Behavior Analysis and Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and Doctoral programs in Applied Developmental Psychology and Human Services Psychology (HSP). The HSP program is based on an integrative biopsychosocial training model and includes tracks in Behavioral Medicine, Community/Applied Social Psychology, and Clinical Psychology (APA-accredited).
The Department of Sociology/Anthropology includes 16 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members, and houses undergraduate programs in Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration and Policy (which includes a public health track), and an MA program in Applied Sociology. Faculty members also provide leadership and core support to the Doctoral Program in Gerontology, a joint program with the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The Department has three broad research and teaching foci: health and aging; gender, inequality, and diversity in global contexts; and applied social science research methods. The Department's Center for Aging Studies is a major hub for federally funded aging and health-related research at UMBC.
The Department of Public Policy includes 9 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 30-plus affiliate faculty members from related departments in the College. The department offers Master's and PhD degrees in Public Policy in five policy and two disciplinary concentrations, with the health policy concentration having the largest enrollment. Four members of the department currently conduct health-related research in such areas as health economics, disabilities, mental health, and the health impacts of environmental risks.UMBC is a research university located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, which provides rich opportunities for working with diverse populations and a wide range of collaborating partners.
UMBC investigators lead and participate in multidisciplinary efforts with a large number of local universities, institutes, government agencies, and community organizations, including the National Institutes of Health, Social Security Administration, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. UMBC has a joint graduate school with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, enjoys strong relationships with the Schools of Medicine, Law, Nursing, and Social Work, and offers a joint doctoral program in Gerontology. CAHSS faculty members are involved in externally funded research with annual expenditures in excess of $10 million. UMBC's total annual research expenditures are in excess of $79 million.
