Tenure-Track Faculty position in Medical Education Research
The Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, invites applications for two (2) tenure-track faculty positions at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor; the specific research fields targeted are: 1) assessment; and 2) simulation. The Faculty is comprised of members with a wide variety of academic backgrounds and interests, and features a vibrant research atmosphere and many linkages to internal organizations including: the University of Ottawa’s Office of Continuing Professional Development, Teaching and Learning Support Service, and Faculty of Education; and research units at the local hospitals such as the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre. Liaisons with organizations such as the Medical Council of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada are well established. The Faculty of Medicine has established a unique Department of Innovation in Medical Education, which will be the primary academic appointment for the successful applicants.
The Faculty is seeking PhD researchers with a focus on medical education research in assessment or qualitative methods. Preference will be given to applicants with experience and excellence in medical education research, especially as it relates to the health professions within a Canadian context.
For the assessment position, the Faculty is seeking a PhD researcher with a focus on the application of psychometric research methods in medical education. Experience in the following specific areas is required:
• Competency-based assessment;
• Workplace-based assessment;
• Assessment of clinical skills;
• Application of classical and modern test theory, modern validity theory, computer-based testing, item development, examination scoring, standard setting and formative assessment to the development of assessment tools.
For the simulation position, the Faculty is seeking a PhD researcher with a focus on simulation based education and research in medical education. Additional experience in any of the following specific areas is encouraged:
• Competency-based education and assessment;
• Transfer of learning from simulation-based education to the applied environment;
• Application of qualitative methods to simulation research;
• Application of simulation to healthcare outcomes.
These positions offer protected time for research, resources to assist in grant capture, support for individual professional development and opportunities for productive research collaboration in an environment that promotes a spirit of inquiry. Applicants must have a PhD in education, experimental psychology, or a related field.
