DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University's Department of Sociology invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Community Organizing, Environment, and Theory.
RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee's qualifications and experience. The current California State University Salary Schedule is available at: www.humboldt.edu/aps/docs/Salary-Schedule.xls.

Professional Qualifications: An earned Ph.D. in Sociology or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred at time of appointment. Applicants with considerable progress toward doctorate degree completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of terminal degree is required prior to the start of the second probationary year following initial appointment. The ability to teach graduate level qualitative methods is desirable.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
Experience and/or commitment to promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
Experience or preparation to teach community organizing, social movements, courses related to the environment and inequalities, and theory;
Record of engagement with non-campus community organizing/social movements;
Ability to work well with others;
Record of, or potential for, involving students in research and scholarly activity;
Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses (major, general education, etc.); and
Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences.
At the time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States. Evidence of degree(s) is required at time of hire.
Professional Duties: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: Classical or Contemporary Sociological Theory, Social Movements, Community Organizing, Courses in the Environment, Public Sociology, Research Methods, (among others). Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are teaching, research & scholarship with graduate and undergraduate students, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
General Information: The Sociology Department offers a B.A. in Sociology, a B.A. in Criminology and Justice Studies, and an M.A. degree in Public Sociology, Ecological Justice and Action. The Sociology bachelor's degrees have a rigorous core of theory and methods courses, knowledge areas in inequality, communities and environment, and culminate with a capstone senior project. There are approximately 125 majors, with about 35 graduating each year. The master's degree has two tracks, one in teaching and the other in public/practicing sociology. The public/practicing sociology track is accredited by the Commission on Applied and Clinical Sociology. There are approximately 30 graduate students, with about 10 entering the program each year. Finalists for this position are required to be fingerprinted through the Humboldt State University Police Department.
