One of many things I hate about AJO is how confusing it is for my letter writers. They want to tailor their letters to the school a bit, but it seems as though a "generic" letter is already there from a prior application. I'm concerned that this "generic" application is actually addressed to another school, however, so I asked the site to send the letter writers another email so they would upload a new letter for the new job. Now I'm also a little concerned that they are overwriting the first letter they submitted for the first school. How have others dealt with this? Just asked for generic letters and left them available for all participating departments? Anyone have a better handle on how it works? Why oh why can't we just email everything?

This system actually annoyed me in some ways and benefited me in others. Yes, I was able to select an already-uploaded document and import it into a profile for a new job, but the inability to tailor reference letters to a particular place was a negative. This can be especially inconvenient if one has a range of research interests that fall under one umbrella and is applying to specialized positions, because there is no telling whether, for example, letter writers stressed a candidate's credentials in social psych enough while speaking about research on gender strat. Fortunately, the positions I was applying for were closely enough related that it didn't make a difference, although it seems not to have mattered for my prospects of making the cut anywhere, regardless.
