Who snagged this one? I suspected an inside hire was in the midst. I know the person who got the position, but will allow that person the freedom to decide whether to share that info. I will, however, say that your "inside hire" fear is, as is usually the case, pointless paranoia leading to inaccurate conjecture.

I will, however, say that your "inside hire" fear is, as is usually the case, pointless paranoia leading to inaccurate conjecture. 99% of academic hires are directly or indirectly inside hires...academia is very elitist, which thrives on the notion of (pseudo) meritocracy...Congrats to the new hire! For all those interested in responding to this comment, please remember that we have several ongoing conversations in the "Misc. Job Market Discussions" section concerning elitism, the perceived absence of meritocracy, inside hires, and other related sins attributed to academic job markets. You can also start a new discussion there, but please avoid the temptation to hijack the "hires" or "status" threads.

Indeed, there is a difference between rumors and pointless conjecture, but 1) this is not such a case, and 2) what I called pointless is the paranoia; I rightly noted that the conjecture is inaccurate.
