Hi mods, perhaps we need a new folder for "now that you've got the job" type of issues? Following on from this thread on a new hire at a SLAC, there was an interesting discussion of problems that new hires might step into, problems of the political kind. ( socjobs.proboards.com/thread/3295/advice-newbie-slac?page=2) I just thought we should continue the discussion in a new thread, given that this is definitely not just a problem at SLACs. Not being at a slac, but maybe lower R1, I've seen issues caused by shall we say, a bit of favoritism towards one's own PhD students. Our new hire seemed to draw attention away from that particular student, and the faculty member didn't like that. Another source of tension is when people have very similar research areas, but it turns out they don't particularly get along on a personal level, meaning that there can be worries about agenda swiping and what have you.

I've created the folder you suggested, and moved this thread to it.
