Position: Tenure-track assistant professor beginning September 2014. We are specifically looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher-scholar with strong background in Applied Sociology and quantitative design and analysis. Priority given to candidates with expertise complementing current faculty to support implementation of a new 4+1 integrated BA-MA program in Sociology with special focus on Applied Sociology. Assistant professors are evaluated annually on teaching success, research/scholarly record, and service; the normal probationary period is 6 years. Professional Responsibilities: Develop and teach courses (undergraduate and graduate) in Applied Sociology, as well as other core areas of the discipline. Candidates must also have strong background in design and analysis for program evaluation (both outcomes and process evaluation), demography, and/or GIS. Some Sociology courses will be offered entirely on-line or in “hybrid” format. It is CSUB policy that faculty using technology-mediated pedagogy must be formally certified through an approved training program. Continue to develop research/scholarly record during 6-year probationary period, as well as professionally-related service record. Service may involve community-based programs associated with the School of Social Sciences & Education’s Center for Quality of Life.
Qualifications: Candidates must have Ph.D. degree in Sociology (ABD accepted, with all requirements completed by Fall 2014) in Applied Sociology and strong background in quantitative design and analysis, especially program evaluation, demography, and/or GIS. Candidates must provide documented evidence of undergraduate teaching success using diverse pedagogy. Candidates must also provide documented evidence of a developing research/scholarship record, especially in Applied Sociology that can be sustained at CSUB. Priority given to candidates who are developing a professionally-related service record of delivering evidence-based programs in Applied Sociology to rural communities. Send an original and personal letter of application; current curriculum vita that includes documentation of teaching experience, research/scholarly record, and service activities; personal statement regarding teaching philosophy and teaching effectiveness (especially with undergraduate students) and research/scholarship agenda; transcripts verifying course work and award of degree; and names of at least three (3) professional references and contact information (address, office telephone, & email). We will contact references for semi-finalist and finalist candidates directly.
Compensation: Based upon academic year appointment and highly competitive dependent upon qualifications and experience.
