I am teaching as a visiting prof at a school that is just a few miles from an institution that is hiring for a TT spot. I'm wondering if it would be weird for me to hand deliver my application to the chair of the search committee and introduce myself.
Has anyone else navigated this issue? What advice where you given and what did you decide?
Thanks!

Yes, that would be weird. Send it in the mail like everyone else.

Yes, that behavior would not be looked at too positively. First, it tells the committee that you cannot follow directions, or even just proper protocol. Second, the behavior reeks of borderline psychotic-ness, if not at least desperation. Don't do it.

Ouch. Okay. Point made. I will not hand deliver.

I think that you could deliver it to the department and introduce yourself - but to the support staff, not the chair of the committee or any other faculty member.

Yes, it would be a bit odd. You'd probably make people feel a bit uncomfortable since the department knows it is pimping you for the time being ;D However, people might drop you a line informally like, "Hey, I noticed that you applied..." At that time, it's okay to engage. This type of behavior among search committees (especially at state schools) is usually frowned upon but it happens. Lots of people bend and even break the rules, but as a candidate, you shouldn't be as professional as possible.

Also if you seem to eager, even if they offered you a job, you have reduced your advantage for salary negotiations.

I hand delivered an app to a local school, gave it to the admin front desk people, and got a campus visit. So apparently that doesn't automatically make you into a pariah.

I would be careful about visiting. I can see delivering an application if its a hardcopy to the office, but I would not introduce yourself to anyone on the search committee. I would think sending an email to the search chair noting interest or asking questions would be much more appropriate, especially if you want to be in the area. If the position is advertised, any other actions may violate EEO or institutional hiring rules giving everyone equal consideration, & you don't want your application 'tossed' for crossing a line.
