Position Summary: The Department of Sociology in the College of Social Sciences at California State University, Fresno is accepting applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank with a Fall 2014 start date. We are seeking a generalist in statistical procedures who: 1) excels in teaching undergraduate statistics and quantitative research methods—covering areas of hypothesis testing, multi-variate linear models, and non-parametric analysis; 2) conducts scholarly and applied research; and 3) engages in service-related activities.

Overview: The Department of Sociology is among the most community-engaged departments at California State University, Fresno, and offers a baccalaureate of arts degree (B.A.) in sociology, as well as a minor and two certificates: 1) the Humanics Certificate in administration and leadership for community benefit organizations, and 2) a certificate in applied sociological research. All faculty are active in research, and students are encouraged to obtain research experience by working closely with faculty. The department also offers opportunities for outstanding students to gain hands-on research experience in applied community-based settings.
Faculty Responsibilities: As educators, scholars, colleagues, and community members, faculty have a responsibility to uphold the standards and ethics called upon by the profession. Regular responsibilities include research, publication, and other scholarly activities, as well as advising students and engaging in service at all levels of the university. The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance education mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction. Required Education: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Sociology or closely related discipline from an accredited institution is required for appointment to a tenure track position. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; however, the doctorate must be completed by 8/15/2014.
Required Experience: Candidates must provide evidence of success in scholarly research and teaching experience in statistics, quantitative research methods, and quantitative data analysis for applied/public sociology. In-depth experience with SPSS is required. Secondary area of expertise is open. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Ability to also use Excel and other software packages to analyze and present data.
