I received a rejection letter from Rice on 1/22. Does anyone know if they made a hire and who?

They did hire at the associate level. I can't say who because I was told in confidence, but I know the person accepted the offer.

I'll second what the person above said. They hired an Associate. Not sure if the cat is out of the bag yet, so I can't say much more.

Their associate hire - was that search originally for the assistant professor position (i.e. did the candidate apply for the assistant professor position get offered the job at the rank of associate)?

There was no Assistant Professor position. It was an open search.

The process is final; congrats to Jim Elliott of U Oregon (and to Rice for snagging him!).
And yes, it was an open-rank search.

Dayum! Nice score, Rice! And congrats to Dr. Elliot for what is likely a 20-25% pay increase, better work conditions, and a more relevant part of the country for his area of research.

A more relevant region for disaster work.... until the Cascadia Subduction Zone ruptures. Then, OR/WA/BC will be the hot-spot for that kind of work.
