^ Interesting point. I see people using it like it speaks to the expression of a 2 year old who's had a spanking. But I thought it was the expression of... well, we've all seen deliverance right?
Can someone clear that up ?
(sorry for the derail)

With Muller taking Berkeley, does that leave NYU to hiring Tavory and no one else?

NYU is still considering candidates for an open-rank qualitative search. Their junior search is over--a hire of Tavory and nothing more. We only had one jr. line to begin with but convinced the dean to let us have 2 lines ONLY if we could get both Muller and Tavory. If either declined [as Muller did], the line vanished rather than falling to the next candidate.

Out of curiosity, what is the rationale behind getting a person-specific line like this? Surely, there were other credible
candidates for the position who could have filled the position. And every department has an interest in increasing the number of tenure-line
faculty...

I have no knowledge of this particular case, but usually the rationale is the same as an opportunity hire. The department makes a case to the Dean that this particular candidate is exceptionally good, and the understanding is that it counts against what they would have gotten in the future.

Guest 321 is exactly right, and given that all faculty were wildly enthusiastic about both candidates it headed off a tough decision that could have bee a fight.
