It could be a he. Perhaps "puhlease", unlike the rest of us, knows who this person is.

Dear Market-Staller(s?), Please take a job. Sincerely, The rest of us He doesn't owe you anything. He should take his time and get the best deal he can. This conversation seems to presume that "Market-Staller"'s decision has any bearing on the prospects for other candidates. I agree it is bad form to sit on multiple offers *if* any of them are transferrable (thereby holding up the market for everyone else). Yet very often this is a non-issue because deans won't permit depts. to go after their 2nd or 3rd ranked candidates. So it is difficult to make any intelligent commentary on the ethics of such cases without knowing the particularities of the situation.

I think the status of the NYU position has been made as clear as possible, short of naming names. Let's move on. Feel free to discuss issues involved with receiving multiple offers in a new "Miscellaneous Job Market Discussions" thread.

One of three in 2 years to turn Harvard down. Guess it depends how you define "several" and "recent." They hired 5 others since the recession.

An entry-level job at Harvard should still be thought of as a five-year postdoc, even with their recent "reforms." If you want to land somewhere where you might have a reasonable hope of getting tenure, you'll let everybody know you got the interview in Cambridge but then choose someplace else to live and work.

Just want to go on record that I really like the phrase butt hurt as used by the poster before the most recent. I dont really know what it means but think that makes it even better. Congrats to whomever was hired.
