It's more or less the unofficial journal of the ASA marxist section, at least that's the reputation from not too long ago. If you do marxist sociology (even broadly conceived), i.e., old-style materialist work, western marxism, heterodox critical theory, etc., then it is the journal of record to publish in. They are very open-minded in the last few years. Even Durkheim will get a fair hearing.
turnaround depends a lot on how much your submission fits into the publishing fads -- e.g., if you're into critical race theory, for example, there have been a ton of articles in that vein and it will mean a rapid turnaround....if you're doing something very idiosyncratic then it might take longer. But nothing outlandish by discipline norms by all means.
Once accepted, the wait time is longish; quite a backlog there right now, however, I hear that wait times will be going down in the near future. The number of submissions seems to be going through the roof in the last few years with the move to SAGE and the increase in the number of issues per year.
It's a quite solid outlet, in my opinion.

I published in critical sociology and had a pleasant time, but I am a lefty who writes papers are especially critical of inequalities.

I published there a couple years ago. Was very impressed. The editor was always professional, answered e-mails quickly, send the paper out for review promptly, and so forth. Once accepted, the wait for the article to be published online first was pretty long (a few months) and then the wait for it to be assigned an issue and officially published was also long (more than a year). But, I agree with previous posters that it is a quality outlet and that it's trajectory is most certainly upward.
