Interdisciplinary Faculty Cluster Hiring Initiative
The Big Data for the Social Sciences Cluster is part of an Interdisciplinary Faculty Cluster Hiring Initiative, undertaken in accordance with SUNY 2020 plan to hire 250 faculty members. The interdisciplinary faculty cluster hires are aimed at addressing society’s most vexing challenges through the collaboration of natural, life, and social sciences; technology; medicine; humanities; policy; business; and the arts. The positions are designated for faculty members whose research and teaching interests are interdisciplinary. The goals of this initiative are to strategically place Stony Brook University on the emerging frontiers of research and knowledge and to enhance our ability to shape new fields of discovery, learning and engagement.
Cluster Hires in Big Data for the Social Sciences
The last ten years have yielded an explosion in the availability of data extracted from traces of human behavior, including cell phone records with GPS tracking, search engine queries, internet transaction data, consumer behavior, or social network activity. These very large datasets are an incredible resource for social scientists, enabling them to test new hypotheses and study phenomena on a previously unprecedented scale. The technological challenges have intrigued scholars from such distant disciplines as physics and computer science, sparking a new Big Data revolution in the social sciences.
The new cluster initiative will add 3 lines to our existing strengths in Big Data: 2 new “bridging scholars” from social science disciplines with both substantive research agendas as well as expertise in methods and models for Big Data analysis, and 1 computational scientist capable of building infrastructures supporting large-scale data collection and analysis. Together, these scholars will help involve and engage the many faculty in social and health sciences already on campus who have expressed strong interests in the opportunities that Big Data provide for their respective fields, yet face cultural and technological barriers to entry. The recently founded Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) will be an important part of supporting the cluster with computational resources as well as a physical space for collaboration.
For the 2013-14 year we are searching for 3 positions. Each position is at the assistant professor level although tenured positions may be possible for outstanding candidates.

Social Science with Big Data / Mass Web Experiments
We are searching for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor housed in the Department of Sociology. An extraodinary applicant with tenure could be considered. We invite applications from scholars with training and/or research experience in utilizing the novel data and methodologies from the emergent field of Computational Social Science (CSS), e.g. agent-based computational modeling, large-scale digital data of social behavior, and mass web experiments. Substantive research interests and experitse may extend into any area of social science. The candidate would teach in their field of expertise, and train graduate students in a research practicum on new methodologies and analysis challenges in CSS. We welcome applicants who can add a distinctively sociological focus to existing interdisciplinary collaborations across the University in CSS, including the Department of Computer Science and the Institute for Advanced Computational Science. Stony Brook Univeristy expects excellence in teaching and in research and is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and a multicultural learning environment. PhD in Sociology or related discipline required by August 2014.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Sociology or related field.

Computational Methods for Network Data Analysis
The Computer Science department seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member working in the general area of Computational Social Science or Big Data analytics. The ideal candidate will have experience in interdisciplinary collaboration bringing the latest computational techniques to bear on research in political science, sociology, history, economics, or elsewhere in social sciences. Candidates at the Assistant Professor level are preferred, but exceptionally qualified candidates at other ranks also will be considered. Substantially, we seek a scholar in computer science whose research interests lie in one or more of the following areas: graph/data mining, information extraction, machine learning, natural language processing, text analysis, or graph/combinatorial algorithms. The candidates must demonstrate experience in the analysis of large-scale data sets and a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research in the social sciences.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field.
