Last night, I was banned from this site - without warning - presumably for daring mention an alternative job site. It's like I live in China and typed "democracy" into Google. Bad show, ElDuderino. Sociologists deserve better.

Sociologists deserve better. You were banned because you tried multiple times, in less than 5 minutes, to bypass the names rule by linking elsewhere after i had just deleted the names and asked people not to post them again. But don't worry, it is a short term ban that is easy to get around. But I am sure that not being able to name others (while remaining anonymous yourself) js just like living in a totalitarian state. That is the funny thing: people who complain about the names rules always post anonymously.

So, I would have gotten banned for linking to the University of Texas website too? This is publicly available info.
Along those lines, why do you automatically censor references to dot com?

So, basically, you're giving a volunteer moderator trouble so you can direct us all to visit a notorious, vile pit that's used to make money (through ads) off of our anxiety about the job market. Sounds great!

So, I would have gotten banned for linking to the University of Texas website too? This is publicly available info. Along those lines, why do you automatically censor references to dot com? I don't normally ban people, if for no other reason than that it is sort of pointless in a forum that doesn't require registration. I temporarily banned someone yesterday because I had had to delete 3 posts in a span of 5 minutes where the person was insisting on linking to the names even after I had requested people not do that. And the point of the ban isn't to permanently prevent someone from accessing this website. It was simply so that I didn't have to keep deleting the same thing over and over. As for why I automatically censor those links, I've explained it elsewhere: socjobs.proboards.com/thread/2659/new-sociology-job-forum

Here’s an idea “censured,” go start your own board and we’ll see how many people use it under your proposed guidelines (or the lack thereof). The practice of not naming names has been practiced for some time without a problem and most agree with (and understand) it. So you are in the minority, which loses in a democracy.
In the meantime, I recommend that you check yourself and step-off the moderator - who is voluntarily doing extra work on his/her time, including listening/responding to you.
Kudos to you for performing this largely thankless task ElDuderino

Both for putting in the time to maintain and moderate this forum so professionally, and taking the time to respond thoughtfully to any issue of debate or dissent for doing that thankless job, as Styles points out. Thank you!

I also wanted to express my support for El Duderino's work and policy. I can't believe people are so upset about this rule and that they can't see the HUGE difference between this forum and PS/Econ sites.
For those on the dissent side: if it matters to you so much to know names, you are free to go look at the websites of all the universities that have scheduled interviews; don't risk people's jobs to avoid some work for yourself.
