In many online fora (including this one), postings are listed in reverse-chronological order. Thus, people who find a particular thread interesting (thus, is my-dream-r1-or-regional-SLAC hiring, for example) may wish to keep that thread "current" so that casual readers--perhaps those with an answer--might see it. Instead of writing "any new information?" they have adopted the practice of writing "bump" to "bump" the tread to the top of the forum. Of course, this is an odd practice for a board like this, where attention from those in-the-know is likely to already be focused on the relevant threads, but I suppose it might work to get information from more casual folks (like those who might have a friend interviewing at a particular place). But anyway, that is what it means. See definition #8 here: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bump#Noun Also, since this is an anonymous internet forum (meaning, snarky), perhaps also this: knowyourmeme.com/memes/sites/let-me-google-that-for-you-lmgtfy
