I have a reliable source who has told me that a certain school will be hiring. This person says that what they are looking for is a perfect match for what I can offer.
Would it be a terrible breach of etiquette to send a letter with a cv saying, "I work closely with someone who mentioned that I would be a good fit there; so I am sending a CV just for your information. Should you decide to hire in the future, please keep me in mind"?

You do not know if the person was authorized to tell people about potential future hires, and you might get that person in hot water. It is also not going to make a lick of difference when the job actually is posted, because every faculty member likely has a 'pet' candidate that they will be pushing for. Settle down, wait for the job to post (or not), and then apply when it does.

I would just wait. I imagine if they are going to post an ad, legally you have to officially apply for the position to be considered so you will have to apply anyways. You could ask your contact to pass along your CV to the search committee chair, or get in contact with that person yourself once the job is posted. Also - care to share which school?

Such a "cold call" is fairly common practice in other disciplines, and it doesn't strike me as a breach of etiquette. But, I agree with wait that it would be better if you could get a faculty member (ideally the "reliable source" you mention) to pass along your CV for you.

Goodness, lets not overthink this. What possible advantage could be gained from a "cold call?" None that I can see. Could it cost you? Yes, it could. So don't do it...

Yeah, agree with (most) everyone above. They won't hire you without a nationwide posting, bringing in a bunch of people to interview, and making a committee-wide and/or faculty-wide decision.
They won't do a nationwide posting just to hire you, as they'll be going for the best candidate they can get (which may, or may not, be you, it just isn't known until the applications have all come in).
So, there's no point in sending your CV to them cold, because it'll just go into the garbage can, even if your contact personally hands it to the chair.
