Sorry... should have posted in the postdoc thread... Could you please delete the other one?
Hello - it is with great pleasure to let people know about postdoctoral opportunities down under. We have a nice postdoctoral program available for people who come from outside of the University of Melbourne, and we are apparently Australia's top university, if the rankings are to be trusted. I'm an economic sociologist working in the Management and Marketing department, so doing my part to promote the university. Life is pretty good down here in Australia, and if you check our university salary scales, you will see that even postdocs gain a pretty good living. www.policy.unimelb.edu.au/schedules/MPF1170-ScheduleA.pdf
The university would really love to get more people coming in through this program, esp. from North America. This is the type of postdoc where you might want to find a local sponsor or collaborators, but at a minimum, you need to touch base with the prospective department chair (head of dept) in order to ensure approval, and they need to sign off on your form -- so please plan ahead at least 1 week for this. We have scanners here, but with the time zone difference this can't be at the last minute. Another key concern: PhD in hand and only since January 2011 - they mean it. You can submit an exception request, but note the earlier date for that. They do seem to take seriously life circumstances that took you out of the game for a while, such as family responsibilities.
In terms of collaboration, it's not required, but if possible, I would advise at least 3 coauthored publications for field F3: collaboration in the form. Knowing how things work here, I suspect that applications with known and named specific people will do better than general projects. Though it doesn't look like a local sponsor is a full requirement. For field F5: Future Plans - have a think about what you might want to do in Australia for the next few years -- maybe go for some ARC funds or do additional projects? References: this one is serious, so do chase down your recommenders. Use generic interfolio if need be. (Also a good opportunity if you have found a local sponsor.)
Now if you want to be in sociology or in an interdisciplinary area, I would encourage you to take a look at the website and start some discussions. As with most postdocs, this is a reasonably high amount of work to do, but compared to job applications, you aren't competing with nearly as many people.
I also wanted to mention that for those interested in working on something related to art markets and art investment, I am interested in hosting some postdocs. I could potentially act as a sponsor/reference for an application to do a project here in the management and marketing department, or suggest others depending upon your research. I am an economic sociologist trained at Chicago, who did a big cultural ethnography dissertation and am working toward mixed methods now. I have projects related to art investment, art price indices and the globalization of the market. I would be looking for a collaborator or two with either a similar research focus or an interest in now working on the art market and quant/SNA skills. For the 3 year period, I'd hope to get maybe 3 coauthored publications out? Key concern: these need to be journal articles, preferably in business/management. Here's my faculty page and you can google for my CV: fbe.unimelb.edu.au/managementmarketing/staff/academic/erica_coslor -- You'll find my email there, and please do drop me a line. You would need to start chatting with me soon though, as I'll be attending AOM and the emails do pile up when traveling.
I am also very happy to say that I have double checked, and although the instructions you will find online say that the university "does not sponsor a visa," this is not a hidden way to limit it to Australian citizens and residents. Instead, it means they don't pay for your visa. If you were to win the position, they would write the letter to endorse you for a visa, they just don't pay the $400 or so that you would need to file a visa application. (But that would be after you'd been offered the job, and depending upon your sponsoring department, they may decide to reimburse you for this. Flights and relocation, I have no idea, though that sounds like a great thing to ask the head of department about when you get their support.)
Good luck and I hope to hear from some of you,
Erica
