ASSISTANT RESEARCHER IN SOCIAL DEMOGRAPHY
Position #0083399
University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Center on the Family (COF)
Full time, 11-month, tenure track faculty position at the flagship campus of the University of Hawai‘i system. To begin January, 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and conduct integrated research and outreach activities in areas relating to the well-being of families in Hawai‘i and consistent with the mission of COF. Examples of relevant content areas include, but are not limited to: small area population estimation, household and family demography, race and ethnicity, and population health.
Implement an outreach plan to complement the social demography research agenda, e.g., develop and disseminate fact sheets, policy reports, or other educational resources; conduct workshops and/or seminars for public stakeholders.
Provide leadership and guidance to Center projects involving social demographic issues.
Publish in academic journals.
Secure extramural funds.
As member of COF’s Data Center team, (a) develop social indicators that support data-informed decision making and programming; (b) participate in relevant strategic planning; and (c) represent the Data Center with government and community agencies.
Teach one 3-credit course per year.
Provide service to the University and community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Doctoral degree in social science, public health, or a related field, with a specialization in demography from a college or university of recognized standing; ABD candidates may be considered, but all degree requirements must be completed at the time of hire.
Expertise in population modeling and statistics.
Evidence of a programmatic research and/or outreach agenda.
Ability to independently design research projects and general research reports, publications, and grant proposals.
Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
Ability to conduct effective presentations and workshops for academic and community audiences
Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively interact with students and project assistants, participate on interdisciplinary teams, work with community stakeholders, and collaborate with persons from diverse backgrounds.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
A content area specialty relating to the Center’s mission of supporting and strengthening families in Hawaii.
Experience in small area population estimation.
Record of academic and/or applied publication.
Success in grantsmanship.
Evidence of strong teaching performance.
Ability to identify social issues and conceptualize approaches to ameliorating challenges faced by families.
